Intrepid Museum
New York, USA · Since 1982 · Built 1943 (as USS Intrepid)
The Intrepid Museum sits on Pier 86 on the Hudson River, just off 46th Street, so visiting feels like walking out to the edge of Manhattan and stepping onto a massive ship. Instead of a traditional building, the museum is literally a World War II aircraft carrier turned into a floating attraction, with views back to Midtown’s skyline.
About the Museum
The core of the museum is the retired aircraft carrier Intrepid, with exhibitions spread across the flight deck, hangar deck, and interior spaces, so you’re constantly moving between open-air views and tight ship corridors. Around it are some one-of-a-kind neighbors: the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the submarine Growler, and a British Airways Concorde, all docked or displayed alongside the ship.
Highlighted Artists/Works
Flight Deck & Aircraft — Rows of restored jets, helicopters, and historic planes on the open deck, with the city skyline behind them, give you a sense of how crowded and intense life on a carrier would have been.
Space Shuttle Pavilion — The Space Shuttle Enterprise is displayed in its own pavilion on the flight deck, with exhibits explaining early shuttle testing and the jump from atmospheric to spaceflight.
Submarine Growler — A guided route through a Cold War-era missile submarine, tight spaces and all, shows how crews lived and worked below the surface.
Why It’s Worth Visiting
This is one of the few museums where the building is the artifact: you’re literally walking on the deck, bridge, and hangars of a historic aircraft carrier while also seeing major aviation and space vehicles up close. It’s especially good if you like hands-on, physical experiences and want something different from a traditional gallery visit.
